What is Takradhara Treatment?

Takradhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of medicated buttermilk over the forehead or a targeted body part. The word Takradhara is derived from two Sanskrit words:

  • Takra – Meaning buttermilk
  • Dhara – Meaning continuous flow or stream

In this Ayurvedic procedure, specially prepared medicated buttermilk is poured in a thin stream for therapeutic benefits. Takradhara is considered a highly effective treatment for balancing the mind and nervous system and is widely used in various neurological and eye disorders.

Duration of Takradhara Treatment

A Takradhara session generally lasts for 45 minutes to 1 hour (one Muhurta), depending on the patient’s condition and the severity of the disease.

The therapy is usually recommended for:

  • 7 to 14 consecutive days, or
  • As advised by an Ayurvedic physician.

The ideal time to perform Takradhara is during the early morning hours, preferably between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

Materials Required for Takradhara Treatment

The following materials are required during the procedure:

  • Dhara Droni (Ayurvedic treatment table)
  • Dhara stand
  • Dhara pot
  • Stove
  • Steel vessels
  • Sterile cotton pads
  • Bandage cloth
  • Large spoon
  • Sterile clothes
  • Chair or stool
  • Small pillow

Preparation of Medicine for Takradhara

1. Preparation of Takra (Medicated Buttermilk)

  • 1.5 litres of milk is diluted with four times water.
  • The mixture is boiled with skinned and crushed Musta tied in a muslin cloth.
  • It is reduced to the original quantity of milk.
  • After cooling, a small amount of sour buttermilk is added and left overnight for fermentation.
  • The next morning, the fermented curd is churned by adding 500 ml of Amalaki Kwatha.
  • The butter is completely removed.
  • The filtered medicated buttermilk is then used for Takradhara therapy.

2. Preparation of Amalaki Kwatha

  • 200 grams of dried Amalaki (Amla) fruits are boiled in 8 litres of water.
  • The decoction is reduced to 2 litres.
  • Out of this:
    • 1.5 litres are mixed with the medicated buttermilk.
    • 500 ml is used to wash the head after the therapy.

Takradhara Procedure

Pre-Procedure Measures

Since Takradhara is a Shamana therapy, no special Purvakarma is generally required.

Before beginning the treatment:

  • Suitable medicated oil is applied to the head.
  • Eyes are covered with flower pads and gauze.
  • A bandage is tied above the eyebrows.
  • Cotton pieces are placed in both ears.

Procedure of Takradhara Treatment

  • The patient lies comfortably in a supine position on the Droni.
  • A small pillow is placed under the neck.
  • The Dhara pot is positioned to allow a continuous stream of medicated buttermilk over the forehead.
  • The tip of the wick remains approximately 4–5 cm above the forehead.
  • The total wick length should be around 8–10 cm.
  • The buttermilk collected from the Droni is reused during the session.
  • The pot is moved gently in pendular movements to ensure continuous flow over the entire forehead.

Post-Procedure Measures

After completing the therapy:

  • The head is wiped gently using a soft towel.
  • Rasnadi Powder is applied to the middle of the head.

Instructions to Follow After Takradhara

After Takradhara treatment, the patient should:

  • Avoid direct exposure to cold air.
  • Avoid excessive dust and smoke.
  • Avoid washing the head during the treatment period.
  • Avoid fried, spicy, and junk foods.
  • Consume light and easily digestible meals.
  • Avoid daytime sleeping.
  • Avoid staying awake late at night.
  • Maintain proper and restful sleep.
