Snehapanam Procedure in Ayurveda – Method, Duration, Benefits, Indications & Contraindications
Snehapanam is a classical Ayurvedic procedure generally preceded by Panchkarma (Purificatory methods). In this procedure, medicinal lipids are administered orally. There are 4 types of medicinal lipids used in Snehapanam – Ghritam, Tailam (oil), Vasa, and Majja. Practically, medicated Ghritam and Tailam are used in maximum patients for better therapeutic outcomes.
At Om Ayurveda Eye Care Centre, the selection of Ghritam or Tailam is done only after proper consultation to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety.
The procedure of Snehapanam is generally done in the morning on an empty stomach and follows an ascending dosage pattern. The duration of Snehapanam should be 3–7 days depending upon the nature of disease and the condition of the patient.
Method of Snehapanam (Step-by-Step Procedure)
Before starting the procedure, it is important that the method is properly explained to the patient. The patient should have passed motions and had proper sleep on the previous night, and this should be ensured before beginning.
At Om Ayurveda Eye Care Centre, every patient undergoes pre-procedure assessment to confirm readiness for Snehapanam.
The patient is asked to sit comfortably on a chair with height up to the knee level. He is then advised to pray for a while, and the Physician should also pray for the patient.
The melted Ghritam, in the dose prescribed by the Physician, should be given to the patient to drink slowly. After intake, the patient should drink some hot water.
Post-consumption, the patient is advised to relax and move slowly within the home. He should keep his mind engaged in light activities like listening to interesting music or similar relaxing tasks.
When the patient feels hunger, he should be given fresh, semi-solid, and slightly unctuous food.
Snehapanam should be continued for 3–7 days depending upon the nature of the disease and digestive capacity of the patient.
After completion of Snehapanam:
- 3 days rest should be given before Virechanam
- 1 day rest should be given before Vamanam
At Om Ayurveda Eye Care Centre, post-procedure monitoring is done carefully to prepare the patient for further Panchkarma therapies like Virechanam and Vamanam.
