AKSHI-SEKAM

Definition– This is a procedure in which the medicine (liquid medicine) is applied
as a stream to eyes.

Method

TREATMENT PROCEDURE

The treatment procedure is divided in to three parts…
Purva karma (pre procedure)
Pradhana karma (main procedure)
Pashyat karma (post procedure)

PURVA KARMA (PRE PROCEDURE)
Selection of the patient: –
Selection of the patient for this procedure depends up on the diagnosis
which is done with Astha vidha pareeksha (eight fold examination) and
Dashavidha pareeksha’s (tenfold examination) which is done by a qualified
physician.
Selection of the medicine:
The selection of the medicine for the procedure is based on the patient’s
condition, the medicated decoction is selected depended upon the Rogi bala
(strength of the patient) Roga bala (severity of the patient).
The medicated decoction is filtered with the help of a cotton so that there should
not be any minute particles in the decoction.

PRADHANA KARMA (MAIN PROCEDURE)

Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine position.
One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids should
be wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then liquid medicine should be
put stream-wise in the inner canthus from a height of 4 anguli (1-2 inches) and
collected outside of the outer canthus in a vessel to dispose. Patient should be
asked to open and close the eyes intermittently. It should be done for approx. 2-3
minutes each eye.

PASCHAT KARMA (POST PROCEDURE)

After the treatment the eyes are cleaned properly and the cotton
which is dipped in the rose water is placed up on the eyes and advised the patient
to take some rest.
In the Treatment room, there shouldn’t much air or shouldn’t be very hot.

Indications – It is good in Dry eye disease, Uveitis, Keratitis, Scleritis, Diabetic
Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Ptosis, Different Retinitis and Optic Neuritis etc…

Contra-indications – Caution should be taken in Pthysis bulbi, Tender eyes,
Different Foreign bodies, etc…

ANJANAM

Definition –Medicine applied in the form of collerium is called as Anjanam. It is
applied with a Special Probe ‘Shalaka’. It is applied at inner side of lower eyelid
from inner canthus towards outer canthus. But now a days, it is available in the
form of drops, so it became easy to apply anjana by own self also.
It is extraordinary ayurvedic purifying treatment including pouring of home grown
concentrates. It helps expel the contaminations from eyes, influences it to clear
and enhances vision. Gives a general cooling, invigorating and alleviating feeling
to the eyes.
Anjanam is applied as a preventive measure in daily routine also.
Method –.

Patient is asked to lie down on the procedure table in the supine
position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids
should be wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Collerium is rubbed with
the honey and applied at the inner side of lower eyelid from inner canthus
towards outer canthus with the Shalaka.
But now a days, we can put a drop of anjanam also. At the end, eyelids should be
wiped again with the cotton dipped in lukewarm water or medicinal decoction.

Indications – Dry eye disease, Glaucoma, Diabetic retinopathy, Retinal and
Macular degenerations, Optic nerve degenerations, corneal degenerations and
dystrophy, Squint, etc…

Contraindications – Acute inflammations of eyes like acute conjunctivitis, acute
Uveitis, acute Keratitis, acute inflammation of eyelids etc…

ASCHYOTANAM

Definition –It is a process of application of liquid medicine as the eye drop. It is
often advised in the early stage of any eye disease, this is counted as
Aadyaupakrama (the first procedure).

Method –.

Patient is asked to lie down on the procedure table in the supine
position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids
should be wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then liquid medicine
should be put drop-wise in the inner canthus from a height of 1-2 inches.

Indications – in the initial stage of maximum eye diseases.

NETRA THARPANAM

 

Definition –Tarpanam is a procedure in which Medicated Liquid is put over the
eyes in a ridge surrounding the eyes. Tarpanam word itself indicates nourishment
of the senses. Medicated Ghritam is used maximally in Netra-tharpanam.
Netra tarpanam is a rejuvenating ayurvedic treatment for our eyes. This
strengthens eye muscles, reduces burning sensations in eyes and relieves dry eye
syndromes. Very effective ayurvedic therapy for people working on computers
and mobiles.

Method –.

Before tarpanam, patient should be undergone Purification of Body by Vamanam,
Virechanam, or Raktamokshanam and purification of body parts upper to neck by
Nashyam. Procedure – Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the
supine position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side.
Eyelids should be mild fomented with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then a
Ridge should be made surrounding to eyes. Ridge should be made up of a thick
paste of Masha powder and water. The height of ridge should be 2-3 inches.
When this ridge gets dried, the medicated ghritam (which is melted by keeping
ghritam in hot water vessel for a short while and filtered genuinely) should be put
in the ridge slowly. The ghritam should be filled in the ridge to a height of
eyelashes. Then ridges should be covered by a paper to avoid exposure of light to
eyes. Patient is asked to close and open eyes intermittently. This procedure
should be done for 15-30 minutes depending upon disease and condition of
patients. After this period, medicine should be taken out by making a hole into
ridge on lateral side. Ridge should be taken out and should be wasted in dust bin.
The eyelid should be wiped with the cotton piece. Mild fomentation should be
given to eyelids with cotton dipped into lukewarm water. Eyes should be
bandaged after tarpanam to avoid the direct exposure of light to eyes.

Precautions – Certain precautions should be taken after tarpanam. Patient should
avoid exposure to cold water and wind to eyes. Patient shouldn’t take cold drinks
and cold food items. During the eye treatments, patient should take light and
easily digestible diet.

Indications – Cortical Blindness, Complete Optic Atrophy, Retinitis Pigmentosa and
other retinal degenerations, Macular degenerations , Glaucoma, Diabetic
Neuropathy, Dry eye syndrome, Corneal degenerations and dystrophy, Diplopia,
uveitis, squint, ptosis, pterygium, Other Neuro-opthalmic disorders etc.

Contra indications – Acute inflammations, Infectious diseases, without
purification of the body, foreign body embedded in cornea, acute trauma to eyes,
tender eyes, etc…

 

PUTAPAKAM

Definition –Putapakam is a procedure in which Medicated Liquid is put over the
eyes in a ridge surrounding the eyes. The word ‘Putapakam’ indicates the process
of Putapakam in which medicated herbs are fomented and then its juice should
be extracted out by squeezing and the juice is called as ‘Putapaka rasam’.
Generally Tarpanam is followed by Putapakam.
Putapakam helps to facilitate the absorption and assimilation of tarpanam
medications.

Method –.

Method to extract Putapaka rasam (juice) – certain chakshushya (good for eyes)
herbs should be selected for Putapakam and made into a kalka (paste) by crushing
them and mixing milk. Likewise suitable mamsa (flesh or meat) also should be
made into kalka. These total kalka should be covered by medicinal leaves and tied
with the help of Doorva leaves. It is covered with poultice of mud, and made into
a ball. Then it is put into fire and made to red hot, should be taken out and
allowed to cool down. Then we can remove mud and leaves, the inner fomented
kalka should be squeezed to take out juice (Putapaka rasam), it should be filtered
and should be used.
Putapaka Procedure – The procedure of Putapakam is same as tarpanam.
Putapakam is very sharp to eyes, that’s why now a days Putapaka rasam is put
into eyes as aschotanam.

Indications – Indications for Putapakam is same as tarpanam because it follows
tarpanam in maximum cases.
Lekhana Putapakam should be used in corneal opacity, cataracts, in some
varieties of pterygium etc…
Ropana Putapakam should be used in inflammatory diseases (when acute episode
or active inflammation has been subsided) like in later stages of corneal ulcer,
Uveitis, Scleritis, Optic neuritis etc… to improve the healing of tissue.
Contraindications – same as tarpanam. Putapakam shouldn’t be done in acute
inflammatory conditions.

NETRA PINDI

Definition – Pindi is a procedure in which paste of medicated herbs covered and
enfolded by bandage should be kept over eyes for one Muhurta (approx. 45-50
minutes).
It gives complete rest to eyes. Because of the induced pressure created by Pindi,
the vessels are dilated and drainage is facilitated. This animates the blood
stream around the eyes.

Method – Medicinal herbs should be made into kalka (paste) and covered and
enfolded by a piece of bandage.
Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine position.
One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids should
be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then kalka in bandage
should be kept over the eyelids and patient has to lie down on Droni for 45-50
minutes. Afterwards, Pindi can be taken out and wasted and eyelids should be
gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water.

Indications – two types of Pindi can be used
Sheeta Pindi (kalka of medicines which are cool in nature) – conjunctivitis, corneal
ulcers and keratitis, Uveitis, Acute blepharitis, severe dry eyes, etc…
Ushna Pindi (kalka of medicines which are hot in nature) – Glaucoma, ptosis,
ocular myasthenia, other devastating or degenerative diseases of eyelids etc…

VIDALAKAM

Definition – Vidalakam is a procedure in which paste of medicated herbs is made
into kalka (paste) and should be applied over eyelids both upper and lower lids for
one Muhurta (approx. 45-50 minutes). The word ‘Vidalakam’ means cat’s eyes.
After applying Vidalakam, patient eyelids also look like a cat’s eye.
It gives complete rest to eyes. Because of the induced pressure created by Pindi,
the vessels are dilated and drainage is facilitated. This animates the blood
stream around the eyes.

Method – Medicinal herbs should be made into kalka (paste).
Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine position.
One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids should
be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then kalka should be
applied over the upper and lower eyelids and patient has to lie down on Droni for
45-50 minutes. Afterwards, Vidalakam can be taken out and wasted and eyelids
should be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water.

Indications – two types of Vidalakam can be used
Sheeta Vidalakam (kalka of medicines which are cool in nature) – conjunctivitis,
keratitis, Uveitis, Acute blepharitis, severe dry eyes, etc…
Ushna Vidalakam (kalka of medicines which are hot in nature) – Glaucoma, ptosis,
ocular myasthenia, other devastating or degenerative diseases of eyelids etc…
Caution should be taken that kalka or medicinal particle shouldn’t enter to ocular
surface, otherwise it causes lot of irritation to the eyes. Direct exposure of cool
wind should be avoided otherwise it can cause heaviness and pain in eyes and
swelling of eyes.

JALAUKAVACHARAN

Definition – It is a Purificatory Procedure in which impure blood is taken out with
the help of Leech. Basically it is a type of Raktamokshanam – 5 types of
Panchkarma mentioned in the texts.

Method – First of all leech should be selected for this procedure. It should be non-poisonous
and variety should be ‘Hirudinaria medicinalis’, should be collected from fresh
water, small in size, blackish green in colour,with two sucker mouth. Before use
we should wash leech with turmeric water for 4-5 days.
Procedure – Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the
supine position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side.
Eyelids should be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. We should
select the site where we want to apply leech. Then we should rub this site gently
or should be pinned very superficially so that leech can easily catch the site. Then
we can apply the leech over selected site. Leech starts sucking the impure blood
of patient. We should cover body of leech with cotton dipped in cold water and
should pour fresh milk gently over the mouth of leech drop wise.
When it seems that leech has sucked maximum impure blood, leech detaches
itself or we should put some saindhava (a variety of salt) to detach the leech from
that site. Then we should apply some madhu, ghritam and yashtimadhu or lodhra
powder at the site and can bandage loosely for 6 hours.
Leech should be induced vomiting by turmeric powder gently by squeezing it from
leg towards mouth. Then we should keep the leech in fresh water for reuse.

Indications – Allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis, Scleritis, Recurrent Keratitis, Corneal
decompensasion, Eczematous Blepharitis, Inflamed Pterygium, etc…

NETRA KIZHI-SWEDANAM

Definition – the eye is a site contraindicated for sudation or fomentation, then
also if required, mild Fomentation can be given. The word ‘Kizhi-Swedanam’
means mild fomentation given by a bundle of cloth in which some medications
are filled with which we want to foment.
There are some kizhis like Tulsi-Haridra Kizhi, Yava kizhi, Jasmine flower kizhi,
Caster leaves Kizhi etc…

Method – Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine
position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids
should be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then with the
kizhi dipped in hot water, mild fomentation is done. Eyes should be wiped with
the cotton after finishing swedanam.

Indications – Seborrheac blepharitis, Tarsal Follicles, Acute Conjunctivitis, Acute
Keratitis, Uveitis, Corneal ulcer, Severe Dry eyes, Meibomian gland disorders,
Scleritis, both external and internal stye, etc…

Contraindications – Eyelid skin rashes, skin purpuras, Blisters over Eyelid skin etc.

NETRA ANNA-LEPANAM

Definition –It is a procedure in which eyes are gently massaged with a paste
specially formulated. As the name indicates, ‘Anna-lepanam’ the powder of
Shashti shali (a medicinal variety of Rice) is cooked with goat’s milk and chandan,
gairik and some other medicinal powders are mixed. It should be heated till it
becomes a thick paste. This paste is an Anna-lepanam paste.

Method – Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine
position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids
should be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then this
medicinal paste is applied over eyelids and massaged gently from inner side to
outwards for 5-10 minutes depending upon disease and condition of patient.
After this Eyelids should be wiped with the cotton dipped in lukewarm water.

Indications – Progressive High Myopia, Retinal degeneration, Ocular Myasthenia,
3 rd , 4th, 6th nerve palsies.elid skin etc.

SNEHAPANAM

Definition –It is a Procedure generally preceded by Panchkarma (Purificatory
methods). Medicinal lipids are to be given orally. There are 4 types of medicinal
lipids – Ghritam, Tailam (oil), Vasa, and Majja. Practically Medicated ghritam and
Tailam are used in maximum patients.
The Procedure of Snehapanam is generally done in morning empty stomach and
in ascending order. The Duration should be 3-7 days depending upon the nature
of disease and patient.

Method – The Procedure is explained to patient. He has passed the motions and
had good sleep earlier night, we have to ensure this. He is asked to sit
comfortably on a chair heighted up to knee. He is asked to pray a while and
Physician should also pray for patient.
The Melted Ghritam in a dose prescribed by the Physician, should be given to
patient to drink slowly followed by drinking some hot water also. Then he is asked
to relax and roaming slowly in the home itself and should divert his mind doing
other activities like listening some interesting music etc. when patient feels
hunger, he should be given fresh,semisolid,some unctuous food.
Snehapanam should be for 3-7 days depending upon nature of disease and
digestion of patient.
After completion of Snehapanam, 3 days rest should be given before Virechanam
and 1 day rest should be given before Vamanam.
Instructions during Snehapanam – Patient should follow some instructions
double the days of Snehapanam.
-During days of Snehapanam, patient should drink Hot water regularly.
-Day sleep should be avoided and good sleep should be in night.
-Shouldn’t stop urges.
-Shouldn’t do excessive Exercise, Anger, and sadness, excessive cold and
hot environment.

-Should avoid direct exposure of strong wind, excessive travel, excessive
walking, talking, excessive standing works, exposure to smoke and dust.

Indications – This procedure is a pre-requisite for the Shodhna (5 types of
Purificatory measures).

Contraindications – The patient having very weak Digestion, very sharp digestive
fire, very obese, very weak, having Diarrhea, throat diseases, ascites, unconscious,
vomiting, high thirst, and drunk shouldn’t be given Snehapanam.

SARVANGA ABHYANGAM

Abhyanga is a treatment which includes knead before shower or shower. It is
frequently a piece of different treatment and aides in bringing out the body to

It can likewise be taken to soothe pressure and as an
unwinding of the body muscles

Abhyanga is an oil rub that includes back rub of the body with

VIRECHANAM

Definition
Virechanam or virechana karma is a purification therapy to detoxify the body,
and is one among the five sacred, healing therapies of the Panchkarma. The
Panchkarma encompasses five treatment that can prevent and heal a number of
physical, mental and emotional disorders and illnesses. Virechana is Sanskrit
word that means ‘’Laxation’’ or ‘’Purgation’’ and may refer to any substance
used to induce purging. Virechana is a controlled process that gathers ama
[Toxins] from many pitta locations in the body, concentrates it in the small
intestine and then discharges it.
Virechana customarily leads to a state where the toxic and disease-causing
excessive pitta dosha is removed from the body while there is a formation of
‘’NEW’’ pitta and this leads to all the benefits that healthy pitta has including
promotion of digestion and metabolism. This dosha is believed to control
metabolism, digestion and the body’s energy.
Herbs used for virechana aim at cleansing the sweat
glands, small intestine, colon, stomach, liver, and spleen. A number of herbs are
used for the therapy process, which serves as decongestants, laxatives, and
purgatives. Like in the other ayurvedic treatments and therapies, the virechana
is given after properly judging the type of disease and tolerance of the patient.
Purgation is given with case in specific amounts according to aggravated doshas.

Method
Pre-Procedure measures – Before Virechanam, Snehapanam with suitable
Ghritam or Tailam should be done followed by Full body Abhyangam (oilation)
and Full body Swedanam (Fomentation).
PROCEDURE – Patient is asked to sit comfortably after confirming he/she had
good digestion and sleep last night and has passed the motion comfortably and
feeling a light abdomen.

Patient and Doctor, Both should pray a while for the well-being of patient. Then
selected medicine in a certain amount mixed with hot water should be given to
Patient and should direct him to drink comfortably followed by some another
hot water.
POST-PROCEDURE MEASURES
After drinking Virechana medicines, Patient should drink some hot water sip
wise and should roam in his room itself. Within ½ hour to 2 hours

Indications– Virechana therapy is good for all types of pitta related disorders
such as hyperacidity, colitis, acid peptic disease, hemorrhoids, chronic
headaches, migraine, and malabsorption, some types of diabetes, allergies and
skin diseases.

NASYAM

Definition – the procedure in which medication is administered through nasal
route is called ‘Nasyam’.
Nasyam is a Therapeutic Procedure among 5 Panchkarmas for Purification of
body.Nasyam is mainly for the purification of body parts above the Neck or
URDWANG. Nasyam is also used as an important treatment to nourish all the
structures.
The nasal opening is major passage to the head and has connection with all
another opening of the eyes, ear and mouth as well where ever need to clear out
internal passages.
Procedure-Patient is made to lie on the massage table, a small is pillow is kept
behind the neck so that the head is in a lower position. Facial massage is done for
few minutes by using medicated oil followed by mild steam to face after covering
the eyes. Once the steaming is completed, two drops of medicated or gargling oil
is instilled into the nostrils. The guest has to inhale deeply so that the medicine
mixed with mucus gets accumulated in the throat. After that mucus should be
spitted out and patient is asked to gargle with salt water.
After Nasyam, Patient should avoid day sleep, residing in conditioning Room, cold
food and drinks and direct sunlight.

Indications-Nasyam is useful in almost all disorders of eyes like Glaucoma,
Macular degeneration (both juvenile and ARMD),Dry eye
syndrome,Uveitis,Diabetic Retinopathy, Myopia and related
degenerations,Sclerits,Optic Neuritis and Optic atrophy, Corneal Degenerations
and Dystrophy, Eyelid disorders and Other Neuro-Opthalmic disorders,
Nasyam is good to prevents sinusitis, Migraine, headache, deviated nasal septum,
dust, nasal drip and grey hair, acne etc…

headaches, migraine, and malabsorption, some types of diabetes, allergies and
skin diseases.

Contraindications-Nasyam should not be administrated to pregnant women and
in same conditions Like Acute fever, vomiting and for women who recently
delivered.

THALAPOTHICHIL

Definition – Thalapothichil is a special procedure of application of medicated
paste on the head. Thalapothichil is also called as shirolepa [An ointment to
head /head pack]. Thalapothichil word is from Malayalam where thala refers to
head and pothichil is covering. It is the traditional Ayurveda treatment of Kerala
which is very effective in various Neuro-opthalmic disorders.

Method
The person is made to sit in an easy position. A gentle oil massage is given to
head with specific medicated oil. An herbal paste is freshly prepared by cooking
it with the buttermilk after carefully assessing the condition of the person. The
paste is applied over the scalp in a layer of thickness of about 0.5 to 1
centimeter, leaving a small central portion. A medicated oil is filled in this
groove. The paste is then covered with leaves [plantain or lotus leaf] and cloth
leaving the groove open. At the end of the procedure the paste is removed; a
gentle head massage is given.
Duration of the treatment is 45 minutes – 1 hour (1Muhurta) depending on the
condition.

Indications – Thalapothichil is used to treat a verity of conditions Including Eye
disease like Optic Atrophy,Retinits Pigmentosa and other retinal degenerations,
Macular degenerations ,Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Neuropathy,
Dry eye syndrome, Corneal degenerations and dystrophy,Diplopia,Other Neuro-
opthalmic disorders etc…

SHIRODHARA

Definition – Liquid medicines poured over Forehead in Pendular movement is
called as Shirodhara. The Name comes from Sanskrit words shiro (Head) and
Dhara (Flow). It is a Bahya karma (External therapy) mentioned in Murdha-karma.
The Liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated. But can include
oil, milk, Butter milk, Coconut Water, Medicinal juices or kashayas etc.
There are specialized forms of Shirodhara called Ksheeradhara, Thakradhara,
Thailadhara and kashayadhara.
Procedure– Patient is made to lie down on the Shirodhara Patti (table)
comfortably and and eyes are covered with flower petals. Then suitable medicine
with Optimal Temperature is poured over Forehead with Pendular movement for
One Muhurta (approx…48 minutes) and then head is wiped with a towel. After
that Rasnadi Powder is applied over central Part of Scalp.
After Nasyam, Patient should avoid day sleep, residing in conditioning Room, cold
food and drinks and direct Sunlight.

Indications-Sirodhara is used to treat a verity of conditions Including Eye disease
like Optic Atrophy,Retinits Pigmentosa and other retinal degenerations, Macular
degenerations ,Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Neuropathy, Dry eye
syndrome, Corneal degenerations and dystrophy,Diplopia,Other Neuro-opthalmic
disorders etc…
It is useful in Neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment,
tinnitus, Vertigo, Meniere’s disease, Sleep disorder, Psychological disorders like
anxiety and mental stress. Shirodhara is thought to work by Relaxing the Hypothalamus in the Brain. It can
also normalize the Functions of Hormones that Regulate Sleep and Emotions.

Contraindications– Acute Fevers and Malignant Hypertension, Acute Asthma and
Bronchial disorders.

TAKRA DHARA

Definition – Takradhara is a words made up of 2 Sanskrit words. Takra and
Dhara.
Takra means buttermilk
Dhara means pouring in stream
Takradhara is traditional ayurvedic procedure wherein a stream of
Medicinal buttermilk is poured on to the targeted body part.
In takradhara treatment, buttermilk processed with medicinal herbs is used in
the form of an external remedy in the form of thin stream.
Takradhara can be done for a period of 45 minutes-1 hour (1
Muhurta) at a stretch [1 sitting] depending on the nature and severity of disease
for which Dhara is being done or depending on the constitution of the patient.
Takradhara is done for a period of 7 to 14 days or as recommended
by the physician.
Takradhara is usually done in the early hours of the morning
[preferably between 6 am and 10 am].

METERIALS REQUIRED FOR TAKRADHARA

Dhara Droni [table], Dhara stand, Dhara pot, stove, steel vessels, sterile
cotton pads and bandage cloth, large spoon, sterile clothes, chair/stool, small
pillow.

PREPARATION OF THE MEDICINE

a) Takram: 1.5 liters of milk diluted with 4 times water is boiled withloog of
skinned and crushed Musta tied a muslin bag and is reduced to the
original quantity of milk. The bag of medicament is taken out and
squeezed well. When cooled this prepared milk is fermented by the
addition of a little sour buttermilk overnight. Next morning the fermented
medicated curd is churned by adding 500 ml of amalaki kwatha. The
butter is removed completely and this mixture is used for Dhara after
filtering.
b) Amalaki kwatha: 200 g of dried amalaki fruit boiled with 8 liters of water
and reduced to 2 litres 1.5 litres of amalaki kwatha is used to mix with
buttermilk & 500 ml of that is used to wash the head after the procedure.

Method –

PRE-Procedure MEASURES
Since it is done as a shaman therapy, No poorvakarma is needed. The
application of oil on head and is usually done as a practice. Suitable oils
according to Roga are selected by the physician for this purpose. The eyes
should be covered with eyes pads of flowers and gauze should be tied
around the head above the eyebrows. The ear should be plugged with
two cotton pieces.

PROCEDURE
The patient should lie in supine position on the Droni. A small pillow
should be placed under the neck. The Dhara pot should be kept in such a
way as to allow steady flowing of the liquid. Poured into it over the
forehead of the patient in pendular movements. The tip of dharavarthi
should be 4-5 cm above the forehead of the patient and total wick length
should be 8-10 cm. The Takra falling should be poured again into the
vessel after collecting it from the Droni. The vessel should always be kept
oscillating so that the Takra will fall into the patient’s entire forehead
without interruption.
POST-PROCEDURE MEASURES
After this procedure, Head should be wiped with the towel gently and
Rasnadi Powder should be applied at the middle of head.
Instructions to be followed after Procedure
– After Takradhara, patient should avoid direct exposure of cold air,
excessive dust and smoke and head shouldn’t be washed till the days,
takradhara should be done.
-Patient shouldn’t eat fried, spicy and junk food, instead he should use
light and easily digestible diet.
-Patient should avoid Day-sleep and Night-awakening, he should have a
good sleep at night.

Indications – Takradhara is used to treat a verity of conditions Including Eye
disease like Optic Atrophy, Retinal degenerations, Macular degenerations
,Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Neuropathy, Dry eye syndrome,
Corneal degenerations and dystrophy,Diplopia,Other Neuro-opthalmic disorders
etc…
It is useful in Neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, Vertigo, Meniere’s
disease, Sleep disorder, Psychological disorders like anxiety and mental stress.

Contraindications – Acute Fevers and Malignant Hypertension, Acute Asthma
and Bronchial disorders.

SHIROVASTHI

Definition – Shirovasthi is ancient Ayurvedic treatment that involves warm herbal
oils being placed on the head for a specific period of time. The Name comes from
Sanskrit words shiro (Head) and Basti (Retention). It is a Bahya karma (External
therapy) mentioned in Murdha-karma.

Procedure– A bandage is tide around the patient’s head and open-headed cap is
made. The warm medicated oil poured into this cap and is allowed to soak into
the scalp .This oil is kept on the patients head for one Muhurta (about 45-48
minutes) or as per disease condition of patient. After this period, oil is taken out
by making a hole in this head cap and Rasnadi powder.

Indications – Cortical Blindness, Complete Optic Atrophy, Advanced Retinitis
Pigmentosa and other retinal degenerations, Macular degenerations ,Advanced
Glaucoma, Diabetic Neuropathy, Severe Dry eye syndrome, Corneal
degenerations and dystrophy,Diplopia,Other Neuro-opthalmic disorders etc…
It is useful in Neurological disorders like Multiple Sclerosis, Idiopathic Intracranial
Hypertension, Parkinsonism,Alzeimer’s disease, memory loss, insomnia, hearing

impairment, tinnitus, Vertigo, Meniere’s disease, Sleep disorder, Psychological
disorders like anxiety and mental stress etc…

Contraindications– Acute Fevers and Malignant Hypertension, Acute Asthma and
Bronchial disorders.
